The Old Grey Whistle Test, often shortened to Whistle Test or OGWT, was a British music television show that aired on BBC2 from 1971 to 1988. Commissioned by David Attenborough and created by producer Rowan Ayers, it was overseen throughout its run by executive producer Michael Appleton. Presenter Bob Harris explained the show's title came from an old Tin Pan Alley term: when record labels received a first pressing, they played it for “old greys” — doormen in grey suits. If they could whistle the tune after hearing it once or twice, it had passed the "old grey whistle test."
