Göbekli Tepe (Turkish for "Potbelly Hill"; Kurdish: Girê Mirazan or Xerabreşkê, meaning "Wish Hill") is a significant Neolithic archaeological site located in Upper Mesopotamia—modern-day southeastern Turkey. Inhabited from around 9500 BCE to at least 8000 BCE during the Pre-Pottery Neolithic period, the site is renowned for its large circular enclosures containing massive stone pillars—some of the oldest megaliths known to humanity. Many of these pillars are intricately carved with anthropomorphic features, clothing, and reliefs of wild animals, offering rare glimpses into early religious practices and symbolic art. Rising 15 meters (50 feet) high and spanning about 8 hectares (20 acres), the site also contains remnants of domestic buildings, quarries, stone-cut cisterns, and signs of activity from later eras.
