An insomniac, unnamed narrator is desperate to escape his dull, monotonous life. Seeking relief, he begins attending support groups, where emotional release comes from strangers crying into each other's arms. On a flight home - presumably from a business trip - he meets the enigmatic Tyler Durden, a soap salesman with a wild streak. Tyler runs a secret fight club in a diner parking lot, built around eight strict rules. Drawn in by Tyler’s charisma and rebellious philosophy, the narrator quickly becomes entangled in his underground world.
