Drawing inspiration from the theatrical world of kayfabe - the scripted spectacle of professional wrestling - and his flair for elaborate hoaxes, Andy Kaufman began incorporating wrestling into his act by challenging women in the ring. He adopted an exaggerated, over-the-top persona modelled after flamboyant wrestling characters and dubbed himself the "Inter-Gender Wrestling Champion of the World." Offering a $1,000 reward to any woman who could pin him, Kaufman turned the routine into a bizarre mix of satire and spectacle. For a time, he even enlisted performance artist and friend Laurie Anderson to take part in the act.
