Area 51 is the widely known nickname for a top-secret U.S. Air Force facility located within the Nevada Test and Training Range. Managed as a remote extension of Edwards Air Force Base, it is officially designated as Homey Airport (ICAO: KXTA) or Groom Lake, named after the nearby dry lakebed. While the U.S. government has released few details about its operations, the Air Force describes it as an open training range. However, it is widely believed to be a hub for the development and testing of advanced aircraft and weapons systems. The site was originally secured by the USAF and CIA in 1955 to serve as a testing ground for the Lockheed U-2 spy plane.
