Morecambe and Wise, the beloved British comedy duo, honed their act in variety shows across provincial theatres before becoming stars of a hugely influential long-running TV series. Born Eric Bartholomew and Ernest Wiseman, they adopted their stage names when they joined forces in 1941, debuting as a double act at the Liverpool Empire at just 15 years old. Both had already performed solo on the music-hall circuit. Eric took his surname from the seaside town of Morecambe, and with Ernie hailing from Yorkshire, their northern working-class roots subtly enriched their enduring charm.
