The Anunnaki were considered the divine children of An, the sky god, and Ki, the earth goddess. Scholar Samuel Noah Kramer identifies Ki with the Sumerian mother goddess Ninhursag, suggesting they were originally the same deity. Among the Anunnaki, the eldest was Enlil, the god of air and the chief deity of the Sumerian pantheon. According to Sumerian belief, heaven and earth remained united until the birth of Enlil.
